Uv or not UV, that is the question:
My own, personal opinion, is that I had serious Ich issues until I got the UVs. I also have more established aquariums, so it's up for debate. _________________ Code of the west: Never squat while wearing spurs.

I do know that one of my tanks that I take care of had a uv on it and it always had ich problems so I dont know which is the way to go.
I know on our current tank, we dont run one as I dont need anything else adding warmth to the water. We have a ton of lights and thus far have gotten away with no chiller. I really dont know how helpful they are, we have had really good luck with this tank so we will probably go without _________________ Don't tell me the sky is the limit, when there are footprints on the moon!

I had one on my last big tank, but opted not to have one on the new tank.
Why would I want to kill off the little friendly bacterias that I like so much? I no longer over feed, and I don't have a sandbed in the display...it is remote...so my tank stays very clear.
On my 480G, it made a difference at first, but by the time I needed a new bulb....it was calmed down enough that it made almost no notable difference. I would recommend them for first time big tank owners...as well as a denitrater...but again...once the tank has settled....you can throw that away also. It doesn keep you from having to do monster waterchanges initially.
Most folks that I know that have them, bought them after reading about them, and only keep them on because "it is laying around"
Maybe if I had a really heavily stocked with fish tank that looked grimey from all the poop and dissolved organics....it would make a big difference, but with a good skimmer and a few mangrooves, I get about the same affect _________________ I glue animals to rocks, then drown them!

For a large aquarium, you use a Hot Tub Ozonator or Ozone Generator and it's a UV light, basically, and costs about one tenth the cost of one for a 500 gallon aquarium, or you use a pond UV sterilizer which you can get for around $100 on Ebay.

It doesn't even have to be pretty....I can make it and put it in a box under the stand.... _________________ ....of course Mitch wants a frag of it....Mitch is a coral whore......(stated by mrcrab)

Or you can just run the UV sterilizer in the sump under the tank. _________________ ~Ask me about your Freshwater needs~
